US Open 2024 Revenue Hits $560 Million, Accounting for 90% of USTA's Total Income

United States Tennis Association (USTA) released its latest audited financial data, showing that the association's total revenue in 2024 was $623.8 million, with the three-week US Open (US OPEN) accounting for 90% of that revenue, reaching $559.6 million.

In fact, since 2015, US Open revenue has more than doubled, and 2024 revenue is also up 40% from 2019 (pre-pandemic) levels ($399.6 million). Ticket sales have also grown 75% since 2015, reaching $208.5 million.

At the same time, operating profit has also grown significantly. Operating profit was $151.5 million in 2015, $157.3 million in 2019, and approximately $277.4 million for the 2024 tournament.

Buoyed by strong financial performance, in May of this year, the USTA announced the largest investment in US Open history — $800 million to completely overhaul the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the tournament's venue, including renovating the main stadium (adding seating, two additional levels of luxury suites, and increasing the number of restrooms, staircases, and escalators) and building a new adjacent facility for player rest and training. The renovation project will be carried out in three phases and is scheduled for completion before the 2027 US Open.

This year, the US Open raised its total prize pool to $90 million, with $85 million in competition-related prize money, a 21% increase from $70 million in 2024, setting a new record and far surpassing the other three Grand Slam tournaments: Wimbledon ($72.7 million), the French Open ($65.4 million), and the Australian Open ($62.9 million).

Despite the increase in prize money, players have raised objections to the revenue-sharing ratio, pointing out that in U.S. team sports such as the NFL, MLB, and NBA, players receive nearly 50% of revenue, but in tennis, that share is only about 15%.

According to the USTA's financial data, the $85 million prize pool accounts for only about 15% of the US Open's revenue last year.
