Sports Investment Mogul Mark Cuban Joins Harbinger's $450 Million Fund, Not Just for Teams
On April 23, sports investment fund Harbinger Sports Partners announced the successful closing of its first fund, raising $450 million, with a final target of $750 million by 2027.
Headquartered in Atlanta, Harbinger Sports Partners will invest in team equity, sports technology platforms, media rights management, and athlete-related businesses. The fund's four key figures are:
- Two managing partners: Rashaun Williams, investor in Lyft and Coinbase, and Steve Cannon, former CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA
- Two general partners: renowned sports investor Mark Cuban, and former MLB CFO Jonathan Mariner.

Mark Cuban (pictured below) joined as a general partner when the fund was first established in 2025. He is known for his diversified investment portfolio and deep understanding of media and technology, most famously for buying the Dallas Mavericks for $285 million in 2000 and helping the team win the NBA championship in 2011. In 2023, he sold 68% of the team for $3.5 billion but remains involved in daily operations.

He is widely known for appearing on the TV show Shark Tank, through which he has invested in health, fitness, food, and environmental companies. It was on this show that he met Harbinger Sports Partners co-founder Rashaun Williams.
In an interview last year, Rashaun Williams revealed that in terms of team investments, Harbinger Sports Partners plans to acquire 1% to 5% stakes in 92 teams across the five major U.S. leagues, with deal sizes ranging from $50 million to $150 million.

He further noted: "When people talk about team valuations, they often focus on the numbers, but as team owners and operators, we focus more on internal factors. Valuation growth stems from core fundamentals. As the sports industry moves from 1.0 to 2.0, we see teams transforming from pure ticketing and sponsorship models into media companies, even creating new local revenue streams."
