Tesla Co-Develops the World's Most Expensive Pickleball Paddle: $350, Sold Out Immediately Upon Launch

On December 13, Tesla and pickleball brand Selkirk jointly launched the "Plaid" pickleball paddle. Its name is derived from Tesla's high-end models Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid. The paddle is priced at $350—making it the most expensive pickleball paddle on the market. Within three hours of launch, the paddle sold out.

According to the official website, the Plaid paddle was developed based on Tesla's "first principles" philosophy, conceived from scratch, with every curve and layer meticulously designed and optimized, perfectly integrating Tesla's industrial design and aerodynamic expertise with Selkirk's advanced pickleball R&D technology to achieve superior athletic performance.

The collaboration began at a pickleball tournament in 2023, where Selkirk R&D Director Tom Barnes first met with Tesla's engineering team. After their conversation, Tom produced a batch of custom black-and-white Tesla paddles as gifts for Tesla employees. 

In March 2024, Selkirk's management team—the Barnes family—visited Tesla's Gigafactory in Fremont, California, witnessing Tesla's design and engineering methods firsthand.

During the visit, they connected with Javier Verdura, Tesla's Global Director of Product Design (pictured below)—Javier Verdura is an avid pickleball enthusiast. This meeting led to the collaboration and initiated the paddle design process.

Applying the same principles used in designing the Cybertruck or Model S airflow, the Plaid paddle's aerodynamic testing focused on optimizing swing speed and reducing drag.

Regarding this collaboration, Selkirk R&D Director Tom Barnes stated: "This is not just a branding exercise; it's a true engineering collaboration!"

Selkirk employed a series of cutting-edge technologies in the Plaid paddle:

  • Moment of inertia adjustment system, effectively expanding the sweet spot area and significantly improving shot forgiveness.
  • The paddle's dual-layer box weave structure provides controlled power output while maintaining sufficient rigidity, allowing players to precisely control shot placement. This material design works in tandem with the adjustment system to achieve an ideal balance between power and control.
  • Selkirk's patent-pending InfiniGrit™ surface offers three times the durability of standard carbon fiber and can generate over 2,000 RPM of spin. This technology ensures consistent texture and stable spin performance, helping players maintain excellent play throughout the match.
