Gamified Virtual Cycling Giant Zwift Acquires Competitor ROUVY
On April 29, gamified virtual cycling giant Zwift announced the acquisition of competitor, Czech cycling app ROUVY. The acquisition aims to accelerate the development of the indoor cycling category through strategic collaboration between the two companies, while maintaining separate subscription plans, development roadmaps, and brand identities, operating independently.

Though both are in the virtual cycling space, each has its own distinct style:
Zwift focuses on gamified virtual cycling with more cartoonish graphics, allowing users to ride across virtual islands, and also produces indoor cycling hardware. In contrast, ROUVY emphasizes realistic world routes, enabling users to ride on real-world routes such as the Alps, Dolomites, and Tour de France courses—a feature highly valued by ROUVY's loyal users.

Beyond software, Zwift also develops its own smart bike hardware, such as the Zwift Ride.

Founded in 2014, Zwift experienced rapid growth after the pandemic. Co-founder and current CEO Eric Min served as a Vice President at J.P. Morgan in the 1990s before founding Sakonnet, an energy SaaS technology company.

Commenting on the deal, Eric Min said: "This is an exciting moment for our industry and for cyclists around the world. Over the past year, we've seen the indoor cycling market grow at its fastest pace since the pandemic. Our user base is expanding, with more people discovering cycling for the first time through indoor training, seeking an activity that supports an active lifestyle and long-term health. This growth is driven by the increasing accessibility and simplicity of 'Zwift Ready' smart trainers, which are compatible with almost any bike."
Petr Samek, CEO and founder of ROUVY, said: "I am incredibly proud of ROUVY and our community! This is a strong validation of everything our team and community have built—connecting indoor and outdoor training through real-world routes. ROUVY will continue to be the ROUVY you know and love, with the same team unchanged, and the same commitment to helping riders achieve their cycling goals. For our community, this means we will continue to build the experience you are familiar with, supporting your training year-round. Now, with the support of Zwift and the Zwift hardware ecosystem, we have the opportunity to create even more experiences in the indoor cycling reality space!"
